How a ZEV works
The group for self-consumption shares a connection to the public grid and acts as a single consumer to the local energy supplier. From the connection, either surplus solar power is fed into the grid or additional power is purchased when required.
For tenants and property owners, joining together for self-consumption is often the only option for producing or consuming solar power themselves. Thanks to the ZEV, tenants can use green electricity and at the same time reduce their electricity costs.
After the ZEV is established, the community only receives a single bill from the electricity supplier. The ZEV operator is responsible for further billing among the individual ZEV participants and the metering infrastructure.
Electricity savings for tenants
In 2023, household electricity customers in Switzerland will pay an average of 27 cents per kilowatt hour of electricity. Tenants in a ZEV will pay just CHF 17 per kWh for their own solar power, including operating costs.

How does a virtual ZEV differ from a ZEV?
Since January 1, 2025, properties can form a virtual association for own consumption (ZEV). Compared to a conventional ZEV, there are two main differences:
In the virtual ZEV, properties are connected to the distribution network via a common connection point. The exchange of energy takes place virtually and the existing lines can be used for power distribution without the need for new power lines or structural measures.
Members of a virtual ZEV do not need their own metering infrastructure. Instead, they can use the distribution network operator's metering systems for a fee (metering tariff).
This solution significantly simplifies the implementation of a ZEV and lowers the entry barriers for greater energy efficiency and shared use.
